Thrifting is one of the most sustainable, affordable, and enjoyable ways to shop! It can be incredibly especially rewarding to find items of higher value and interesting pieces to spice up your wardrobe. However, thrifting is typically hit or miss and there is no guarantee you will always have the most amazing hauls. However, there are many things I have learned from my experiences in the thrift scene and I would love to share this information with all of you! So without further ado, here are 10 of my best thrift hacks!
Go Early: Typically, thrift stores will restock early in the day or after they close. Either way, this will give you the best chance to get those high-value items or just some really good finds.
Be patient: Thrifting takes a lot of patience and a lot of effort. No two items are the same so it takes a lot of attention to properly sort through all of the items. Make sure to leave yourself a good amount of time to properly go through all the sections to increase your chances of finding the best items!
Set intentions: It can be a great idea to make a Pinterest board of your style so you can get a better idea of pieces you can use to elevate your style. It can help save some time to go in with certain intentions so that you can identify exactly what you want. However, try to avoid setting extremely specific intentions as each item is unique and may fit your style if you keep an open mind!
Don’t limit yourself: Make sure to check ALL sections. Tops, bottoms, coats, accessories, and check both the men's and women's sections! Sometimes, some of the best pieces lie in the places you least expect!
Step out of your comfort zone: Even though it is important to choose things that fit your style aesthetic, don’t be afraid to try something new every now and then. The beauty is, this is the most sustainable, eco-friendly, and cost-efficient way to expand your style and it can start with an unusual pair of shoes, or scarf, or even a whole new outfit.
Inspect, inspect, inspect: As most of these items are preloved and second-hand, it’s worth giving them a little extra look over before purchasing them. Check for holes, stains, and general wear and tear so you are not surprised by the condition when you get home. Tip: Wash and disinfect everything you buy, you never know what the cleaning protocol is at certain places.
Research the stores: Researching stores in your area can have many benefits. Some stores have discount days and it can be very beneficial to know when those are! Also, some places are cash only so make sure to stock up if you are going to a store that does not accept cards. It can also be great to read reviews so you know the store you’re going to has a good reputation so you do not waste your time.
Set a budget: It can be extremely easy to get carried away but thrifting is supposed to be a cost-efficient way to shop so it can be important to set some limits. Despite the low prices, they add up like everything else in this world and it is definitely worth keeping an eye on! What that limit is, is extremely up to you and you can go over or under as you feel is needed.
Rinse and repeat: If at first, you don’t succeed, try try again! Do not get discouraged as thrifting is never consistent. Just because a place is not as good one day, doesn’t mean it's a bad store (you can make your own assessment after a few trips). Going consistently will improve your luck and increase your chances of finding some great new items for your wardrobe.
Thrifting is a two-way street: Old clothes (in decent condition) should be donated! Whether that be to your local foundation, the salvation army, or your local thrift store, I'm willing to bet your pre-loved pieces can have a whole new life for someone else. If you have pieces that you consider to be more valuable, you can always sell them on places like Depop, Poshmark, or even at your local Plato's closet. All of these things help reduce the need for fast fashion and can help improve your thrifting karma ;)
